Operating System: Microsoft Windows 98 First Edition
This guide is for Microsoft Windows 98 First Edition. Click Here for Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition.
To play the sound for windows 98 in VMware, you need to download the below drivers.
To download, right-click the link and select “Save Target As…” or “Save Link As…”
- Wdmdrv.zip (Extract from the original SBPCI_WebDrvsV5_12_01.exe)
- eapci8m.ecw
Install Sound Blaster PCI128
- Extract the Wdmdrv.zip that you have downloaded from this website and extract to C:\Temp\Wdmdrv.
- On the Windows Start menu, click Settings, click Control Panel.
- Click on System.
- In the System Properties, click Device Manager, expand Other devices.
- Click on PCI Multimedia Audio Device, and click on Properties.
- Click on Reinstall Driver.
- Click on Next.
- Click on Next.
- Choose Specify a location:, and select the path that you have extracted the wdmdrv.zip and click on Next.
- Click on Next.
- If you encounter the error. click on OK.
- Select the path that you have extracted the wdmdrv.zip and click on OK.
- Click on Finish to complete the installation.
- Click on Close.
- Expand Sound, video, game controllers. You should see Gameport Joystick and SB PCI(WDM) installed successfully.
Install eapci8m.ecw file
- Copy the file eapci8m.ecw into C:\windows\system.
- On the Windows Start menu, click Settings, click Control Panel
- Click on System.
- In the System Properties, click Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controller, click SB PCI(WDM), click Properties.
- In the SB PCI(WDM), click Settings.
- In the MIDI Synthesizer Waveset, click Add WaveSet.
- Select the file eapci8m.ecw in C:\windows\system, click OK.
- 8 MB GM/GS Waveset ver 5 will be displayed under MIDI Synthesizer Waveset.
- Click OK to exit and restart your windows 98.

Wow. That’s all I can say. How you figured it out, I’ll never know.
I got the “error” (installer asking me to insert the Win98 CD) not just once but about 20-30 times, but I could only find a few of the files it wanted in the zip folder. When I restarted and opened Device Manager I saw that SB PCI(WM) was not installed correctly – it had a yellow “warning” icon. I tried to go to the settings tab to add the waveset and see if that could resolve it, but the tab said “You do not have sufficient security privileges…” I guess if I had the Win98 CD I originally used to install the OS I might be able to resolve this?
